This is one of the earliest photographs I took of John F. Kennedy on the campaign trail. It became his favorite.

Arriving at dusk on a chilly autumn day in a chartered plane, Senator Kennedy, accompanied by his wife, Jackie, and aide Dave Powers, was then one of seven Democrats seeking his party’s presidential nomination. He was met by a mere three supporters, including Congresswoman Edith Green. He hadn’t announced his candidacy yet but was running hard already.

Years later, when I brought my first book, Portrait, my account of the campaign, into the Oval Office to have the president sign it, he said, “Let me show you my favorite picture, Jacques,” and stabbing his finger at this image he exclaimed, “Nobody remembers that today” — meaning that he was totally ignored.
